Coupons & BOGO...

Lately I've been on this coupon kick.  All I hear on the news is how horrible the economy is and no one can afford to even buy groceries and on and on and on.  I had to come up with an idea for an article for my News Reporting & Writing class so I decided I would write on the flip side: How we can use coupons and food storage to make the dreadful economy not so "sky is falling" mentality.  (Believe me...if I had a bit of Earth, I would plant a garden!)

Since I have been working on this article I figured I needed to familiarize myself more with the concept and how things work.  My favorite sites to visit are on my right side column, but just to spot light a few:

Krazy Coupon Lady (Out west, but still very helpful for the national chains)

And for printable coupons on line I use Grocery Smarts.  There are not that many coupons on this site, and so far I haven't seen them change much, but before you go to the trouble of signing up for all the other coupon claming Web sites know this...most of them lead you right back to the Grocery Smarts site.  They make you fill out a million different questionairs and promise you the chance to win the big bucks, but I would say you will probably just end up wasting your time.

Last week I also received a coupon in the mail for $5 off my purchase of $30 or more at Publix.  It expired today so I had to do a little research on line and make sure I could spend $30 on things I needed so I pulled up the Publix weekly ad.  It turned out that (my) Publix was having a huge BUY ONE GET ONE FREE sale and they had some really great items on sale.  I knew Publix wouldn't just put all the BOGO items in one place, that would be WAY too easy.  So I made a list of all the things I wanted to get and figured I would just go through the other aisles to paruse what else I might want.

Look at what I bought:

You can see what I purchased that were part of the BOGO sale because there are two, but the items on the left (yogurt, Dove, peaches, organic sauce) I had printed coupons from Grocery Smarts.  I realized when I got home that I should have just left the organic spaghetti sauce coupon there for someone else because I could have just purchased the Ragu that was in the BOGO sale for the same price and well...gotten one free.  So that was not smart.  In my defense however Publix closes at 10 p.m. and I got there at 9:39 p.m. so I had exactly 21 minutes to get down EVERY aisle.  It was not an easy task and I am sure I missed plenty of good BOGO items, but I will do better next time.  The items in the center were just items I needed anyway, but I wanted to be truthful when I tell you what I bought and for how much.

Grand Total After Savings/Coupons: $44.44 (that's gotta be good luck)
Total Savings: $37.12

Wow!  I was impressed with myself.  I know I could do better if I can find coupons for items in the BOGO sale, but I searched high & low and simply could not locate any.  Maybe next time.

My point was to add to my food storage, and I think I did just that!

Here is what I call my "rotating food storage" :: as you can see one of the shelves is reserved for the little human items, but that used to be two shelves, so they are slowly & surely getting relocated.  I have got to find a bigger place...this one bedroom just isn't going to do anymore.  And now that everything is organized nicely, the curtains Mom made me actually cover the shelves again:

In addition to BOGO at Publix I decided I would try out one more store :: Walgreens!  I always hear about amazing deals that people find at Walgreens...I just don't get it.  I NEVER find anything there that I need and certainly nothing that I can't live without.  But today I actually found a few items worth purchasing:

First remember to go to their weekly ad and see what they have first.  If they don't have anything you need...no big deal, if they do...great, and if you can find coupons for items that are on sale...you're flying high!

The Sun Light dish detergent was on sale BO (at $1.79) GO with the coupon you can print from the Walgreens weekly ad on line.  And you can use the coupon TWICE!

The Jello was also BO (at $1.00) GO with the coupon that you could also use TWICE!

I am a Q-Tips snob.  I have tried to use the store brand cotton swab on a stick, but they are more like cotton swab on a straw...so flimsy!  So when I saw the coupon for a 375 count pack of Q-Tips for $1.99 I was so excited.  And this coupon you can use THRICE!  I bought all three...as you can see.

Not pictured was some candy (for a care package) and some coloring books (for my little humans) so I will only tell you the total amount saved:

Total Savings: $8.88 (gotta be good luck!)

I think the Q-Tips alone were worth that...although I do need to check prices the next time I am at Wal*Mart.  One thing I kept trying to use my coupons on was body wash, but every time I went to pick it up I kept thinking "...that is certainly less at Wal*Mart..." I did end up buying the body wash from Publix because one of the scents was marked down.  I guess everyone thought it didn't smell very nice, but I thought it was fine.  It was marked down $0.82 and I had a coupon for $1.50 off, so it worked there, otherwise I would have waited.

All in all I would say it was a successful first go round.  I did learn a few things though, that I think are KEY...let me share:

 * KEEP INVENTORY AT HOME * (I ended up buying the Sun Light liquid dish soap at Walgreens and didn't remember I had just purchased an ENORMOUS jug at Costco a week or so ago.  Does anyone need dish soap?)

 * PLAN AHEAD * (I don't really "grocery shop" because it's just me at home, but I still benefit from planning ahead and when I don't I waste money and no one can afford to do that no matter if they sky is falling!  Read the weekly ad's - they are all on line.)

 * IF YOU'RE NOT SURE JUST ASK * (I didn't know I could use the coupons multiple times at Walgreens, it was an associate that told me.  Also, I had a coupon to save $1.00 on 8 yogurts, but then I saw they had a package of 8 yogurts for $3.99.  That was already marked down and less when you bought them all together but I wasn't sure if they would take my coupon.  My nice cashier Joe hesitated and sort of, kind of asked the lady bagging my groceries.  Even she said something to the effect of "yes, of course take it" but he said "yeah, I already decided that".  I think they will pretty much do anything to make their customers happy.  That coupon made my yogurt $0.37 each and even I know that's a bargain!  And this is the most I have ever purchased at one visit to Publix.)

 * BUY THINGS YOU WILL EAT * (I knew this already, but just a special note when I was doing my pre-shopping on line I noticed that Hershey 6 pack bars were on the BOGO list so I added them to my list.  I have always heard you need that sort of thing in your food storage because when we're in dyer straights that is especially when we will nneed the chocolate.  But in addition to that, you never know when you will be asked to put together an impromptu meal and throwing in a candy bar for kicks & giggles is a nice bonus.  OR if you need a last minute gift, a KIT KATherine can be turned into a great handout with a spiritual thought!  Don't call me Kat, I will have to kill you.)

I am by no means an expert...but my right side column has plenty of those...so check them out.  All I know is that all this food storage is going to come in handy when I don't have an income in a few months and am struggling to keep my sky from falling in on me.

And one more bit of wisdom that I learned from one of those wise women on my side column, accepting our coupons does not mean that their retailers loose that money, they get it back from the manufacturers.  I didn't really think anything other than that, and maybe you don't either, but when I read the post about it I thought "humm, I guess if you don't know, you might think otherwise" so there's my $0.02 worth.

Special thanks to Tara @ Deal Seeking Mom for helping me with my paper for school.  I am super excited to write it...and excited is a hard thing to come by from a senior who can see the light at the end of a very, very dark tunnel.

Tara also said - buy the Sunday paper, lots of coupons!

Good luck & happy shopping!

My "Wordle"...

Tonight I am procrastinating studying for tests in Philosophy and PR tomorrow night.  The PR test I could probably fly by the seat of my pants, but Philosophy is going to kick my trash...so I have to get on with it sooner or later.

In the mean time I created a WORDLE using my blog.
Apparently Mom, Charley, cookies & John have a lot of my attention lately.  Guess I better think of something to mix things up a bit.  I'll get right on that, just let me study for a bit first.

John's Birthday Surprise!

A few weeks (or maybe it was months ago) I enlisted my family in yet another birthday experience!  Little bro John turns 30 years old this coming Saturday and I had to think of something extra special...30 is a big year and deserves something just as big.

Is 30 DOZEN cookies BIG enough for a 30th birthday?
After making and collecting cookies this week I say YES!

Originally I thought I would be able to deliver the cookies to his office today (a Thursday) (because I don't work on Thursdays) but then I realized carrying 30 dozen cookies and Charley into a busy office in downtown Atlanta might be a bit more of a challenge that I am up for.  So in all my brilliance I made plans to take John to lunch today.  A great idea regardless of the cookies, but the cookies just make it even more fun.

Mom joined Charley, John and I for lunch and we had a great time at the little diner across from his office.  Charley really had a great time watching all the people and surroundings.

After lunch John came back to the Kia with Mom, Charley & I and we gave him his presents.

This is what 30 dozen cookies looks like all wrapped up in boxes:

It was a lot.  But it was fun to see John's reaction and hopefully he was able to share some with his friends at the office.

Check back on Saturday for fun pictures of John to celebrate his actual birthday!

Thankful Thursday ::

I am thankful for vehicles :: my vehicle :: my Kia!  It would have been super challenging to get Mom, Charley & myself all the way downtown to have lunch with John today with out the Kia.

I am thankful for my apartment :: in the projects :: drugs available upon request.  But it's mine!

I am thankful for digital cameras :: they are great :: I use mine all the time!

I am thankful for Sharpie Markers :: I *heart* Sharpies!

Happy Valentine's Day!

A Valentine's Day Poem

This Valentine's Day here's a special treat
Oh it's exciting and so very sweet

First a photo fit for a gallery
How exciting there are no calories!

Next is a gem tucked away in dark pages
Those smiles still glowing all through the ages

Mom looks so pretty, that's my favorite dress
Dad sure looks dashing, you have to confess!

Who knew the cultural center walls were so pretty
The decor is lovely, three cheers for the Activities Committee

Run along now, give that gift a second glance
Maybe the church party deserves another chance?

Happy Valentine's Day!

Friday the 13th...

Super quick post at the conclusion of this Friday the 13th!  And what a day it was...

First I found these cute Valentine cupcakes on my car when I left for work this morning.  There was no note telling me who they were from so I called everyone I could think of, but to no avail.  I was so distracted by the cupcakes that rather than deposit my garbage at the trash receptacle, I took it with me to work...gross!

Later I found out the missionaries had received them and wanted to share with me.

One of my BFF's April is in town visiting and we had plans tonight.  Early this afternoon as I drove to pick her up I managed to run over the ramp of a vehicle trailer that had fallen off a truck driving just in front of me on north bound 400.  The guys driving the trailer had stopped and were walking to get their ramp and helped me change my tire.  Little did I know that I didn't even have all the parts necessary to change a tire.  I didn't have a tire iron, so I couldn't even get the flat tire off my car!

A police officer stopped to see if we needed help and he didn't have a tire iron either.  5 (yes, 5!) police officers later we managed to find a tire iron (sort of) and a make shift pipe to use as the missing part to my crank piece that lowers my tire from the undercarriage.  What a mess!

Thankfully I only ran over the ramp with one tire, the woman behind me managed to hit two of her tires and had to have her car towed.  She didn't seem that happy and I felt really sorry for her.  The guys towing the trailer were so helpful, but were also cited, something about an unsecured item...idk.  The sad part for them is that someone actually hit their trailer causing the ramp to fall off.  That person didn't stop, so there is no recourse where they are concerned.  We got case numbers and all that so their insurance will have to replace our tires.

Tonight while I was out driving my car felt funny, so I am going to have to take it in to have the undercarriage looked at.  I certainly don't want something else to be wrong because of it, but I better find out now.

April & I had a few things to do tonight before we could settle down and get some nourishment.  We started out watching North & South (amazing) and then April decided I needed to teach her how to crochet so we had to go to Michael's to get hooks & yarn.  She picked out some pretty orange yarn and I am eager to see how the blanket for her sweetie turns out.

Eventually we made it to O'Charley's and enjoyed some much needed nourishment and girl talk.  We had a great time as usual.

Will called during dinner to make sure I was alive.  He and I were on the phone when I ran over the trailer ramp and I told him I would have to call him back ~ since at that time I had no idea what was wrong.  I sent him a picture, but I guess he didn't get it.  He is so sweet for checking on me!  Sorry I didn't call back.

Then Megan sent a text message so we took that opportunity to send her a picture of us!  *say cheese*  Of course she called because she knew she was missing a GNO, but we didn't feel sorry for her since she was going to see her man up in Stillwater.

After a stop off at Wal*Mart (we *heart* WM) we headed home to start April on her way to Crochet Land.  She's pretty good, I was super impressed at how quickly she is picking it up.

By this point it was after midnight and we decided it would be best to put our hooks down and get her home.  We jump in the Kia and head down 92, about half way there when I realize a cop car is behind me, no big deal I'm driving the speed limit. Yes, seriously!  So he passes me to the left and then he slows down and gets behind me...obviously the lights are coming on.

I pull over and when he got up to the Kia he peaked his head around my window:

him: "Hi.  Do you realize you have a head light out?"
me: "No way, really?! I wonder if that happened earlier today with the ramp?"
cop: "Your license plate light is out too"
me: "My what?"
him: "The bulb that lights up your license plate"
me: "Oh, hmm?"
him: "Is that your driver's license?"
me: "Oh yes, here you go."
him: "OK, be right back"

April & I then discuss how my drivers license picture is THE WORST picture of me EVER!  I say how I wish my student ID picture could replace my drivers license and then the cute/nice police man returns...

him: "OK, you're all set"
me: "Thanks"
him: "Have a good night"
me: "You too...oh, and don't pull me over on my way home, OK."
him: "OK."

All in all it was a great day.  The weather was GORGEOUS and spirits were high!  I (almost) learned how to change my tire, I taught one more person how to crochet, I bought some cute lounge pants at WM and I had a yummy meal and wonderful conversation with am amazing BFF, oh, and I flirted with a cute police man.  Fantastic Day!

Thankful Thursday!

I borrowed Thankful Thursday's from Martha (love you girl!) and until I have the chance to make my own little header, I am also going to borrow that as well.

It wouldn't surprise me if Martha came up with Thankful Thursday's all on her own, she's just that kind of girl.  Either way I think it's a swell idea and I have been thinking all day today about what my first Thankful Thursday post was going to be about.  Obviously I can't post without photos, so here goes:

I am thankful for my mom she rocks!  A few weeks ago I bought these great Lack shelves from Ikea.  I had a hard time hanging them because my apartment is well, really old and I couldn't find a stud (ha! ha!) and the Sheetrock screws I was trying to use were making a huge mess.  Anyway, my mom came over last week (for a different reason) and helped me hang my shelves!

Aside from the large mess that I still had/have to clean up on my desk, don't the shelves look fabulous!   My desk does look a little better today...no wait...nope, still looks the same!  What can I say.  Thank you mom!

I am thankful for MODERN CONVENIENCES...and a mother who taught me how to use them and take care of myself.  Thursdays I don't "work" but I spend the day with my niece Charley.  Lately we have been chill'n at my apartment so I can get the laundry list of "To Do's" taken care of.  Tomorrow I am taking dinner to a friend who just had a baby and I wanted to make fresh bread, so today was Holly Homemaker Day!

And look at my results:
I'm not sure that it is my favorite recipe for bread, but it looks yummy!  I got mom's recipe later tonight so when I run out of this loaf I will try that next.  I will also have to find a good whole wheat recipe and break out my wheat grinder...good times!  Yes, thankful for modern conveniences because my Kitchenaid mixer did all that kneading for me.

I am thankful that in all this mushy talk about Valentine's Day I can find my happiness in the fact that I have complete control over the remote!  ...yes, I can learn to share for the right guy.

25 things...

I have been tagged by countless friends on Face Book to create this list of 25 THINGS.  I don't really get the jist of it but from what I've read of others 25 we just think of 25 random things and write them down.  It has taken me weeks to come up with 25 (new) random things - new as in not previously used on another post were I was tagged by all my friends.  So, here are my 25 THINGS:

1.  I secretly appreciate/love/like that my life is full of so much because then I don't notice the void.  It's not always noticeable to me until someone points it out or until I catch up on all your cute blogs and then I get uber sad.

2.  When I was little I would fake being asleep in the car/couch/floor/parents bed just so Dad would carry me to bed and tuck me in.

3.  I am convinced I am more intelligent than the majority of my professors.

4.  At least once a week I cover my feet with Vaseline and sleep in socks.  It keeps my feet super soft.

5.  I wish with all my heart that I had the chance to visit my grandparents again...I have a million questions to ask and would talk to them for days.

6.  The two best parts of making a wedding cake are #1) seeing the finished product after all the hard work and #2) hearing the bride/groom talk about how they loved it.

7.  It's not that I LIKE to crochet (it hurts my hands a bit)  but I do like making things and learning a new talent and seeing the results.

8.  I brush my teeth in the shower.

9.  I love to clean, it's true (esp Saturday mornings with the windows open!).  However, my apartment is a mess and I need to hire a maid.  I realize I have no husband/children/messy pet (Rhett is such a good turtle...he never complains that his water is dirty) but I have NO time!

10.  When I was 3 years old I was in the bed of my Dad's truck with my oldest sister Anne.  We were "switching humps" and I stood up to switch and Anne didn't, so when Dad continued driving I fell out.  I don't remember it but Dad told me I landed on my feet, didn't cry and was by his side before he could get both legs out the door.

11.  I never attended a single jr. high, high school or college dance...not Prom, MORP, Homecoming, Sadie Hawkins...none!

12.  The night of my senior Prom I went Go Cart Racing.

13.  When the time comes for me to finally buy a home I want the rooms to be huge and the yard to be endless.  I will throw parties where everyone will attend, Mason jars with candles will hang from the trees, a local band will play music and all the yummiest foods to temp our pallets!

14.  I *heart* previously LOVED items.  Some people call it an antique, some people call it old...I'll stick with previously loved.  That building/home/whatever mentioned above ~ I want it to be something that started being loved a very long time ago.

15.  I stopped drinking Diet Coke (again) sometime in October 2008.  I miss it, but I am dealing.

16.  I sleep with an electric heating pad at my feet and a hot rice bag by my side/back.

17.  Being an aunt is the coolest thing ever.  When I plan for my future...I plan for my little humans.

18.  I have always wanted to sing for Walt Disney animated videos.  Now they have famous people sing most stuff and it just doesn't do much for me.  I don't want to be famous, I just want to sing.

19.  I really enjoy quiet and am very sensitive to noise.  I also tend to get headaches on the verge of migraines.  I rarely turn on the television unless I am watching it and my apartment is generally quiet...the only thing I can "hear" right now is the hum from my computer fan, oh and a train just blew it's whistle.

20.  I collect friends...they are some of my dearest treasures.

21.  The two best pieces of advice I received from my mom: never wear elastic waste band pants and always remember/use people's name.

22.  The best advice I received from my dad: If a bad guy ever manages to get in the car with you, make sure he doesn't have time to put his seat belt on and drive as fast as you can into anything that will strike on his side of the vehicle...and make sure everyone sees you.

23.  Donating my hair to Locks Of Love was one of the most emotionally difficult things I have ever done.  I remember driving home in tears, it was horrible.

24.  I will someday write children's books.  Not want...WILL!

25.  I like to be out of town (preferably the country) on my birthday.  I don't mind celebrating the entire month in order to get in all the fun, but my actual birthday I prefer to have something bigger and better to concentrate on.

There you have it...my boring 25.  I'm sure there are very little shocking comments on this page, but who knows...maybe one of these will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!  Kidding.  Feel free to make your list of 25 if you haven't already.

I am embarrassed, but it is what it is.  And in my defense I had a few of them within a mile of the state border, but the program didn't recognize it.  Truth is...those north eastern states killed me!

Good luck!

Why I'm Not Married...

Ladies & Gentlemen...I have figured it out.  I am not married because I stopped drinking (Diet) Coke:

Bouncing Bastings...

This past weekend I spent Saturday evening with Sarah and her little humans (thanks for letting me come over guys!).  The little humans were only interested in taking goofy pictures, but Sarah managed to wrangle them for a super cute pic by the fire place:

How cute are they!
We definitely plan on a future photo shoot just like this, but photo ready!

**********************************************************************************

Now for the cARaZy GooFy pictures!

The little humans were all about jumping to see if I could catch them mid air...and looky here, I managed to do just that!
