love letters | Abigail Adams

I just realized I didn’t post a love letter before I left the house early this morning…and now here it is 9:55 p.m. and I’m upstairs working on those darn yellow shirts and watching Mercy while my blog goes unattended. Now I can’t have that, can I? So, I paused Mercy and ran downstairs to make it right. Whew…that was close. Because I am so sure you are all just dying to hear one more sappy love letter. Well, don’t worry; you get this one plus four more! Yeah!

Tonight I am particularly excited to share a love letter written by Abigail Adams, wife of our second president of the United States. Her words are splendid and cause me to long even more for a true love like you only read about in old books or see on the big screen…or if you’re lucky, you see it every time you look at your parents (like me). I hope you enjoy this excerpt as much as I do.

December 23, 1782

"...should I draw you the picture of my heart it would be what I hope you would still love though it contained nothing new. The early possession you obtained there, and the absolute power you have obtained over it, leaves not the smallest space unoccupied.

I look back to the early days of our acquaintance and friendship as to the days of love and innocence, and, with an indescribable pleasure, I have seen near a score of years roll over our heads with an affection heightened and improved by time, nor have the dreary years of absence in the smallest degree effaced from my mind the image of the dear untitled man to whom I gave my heart."

Lovely.

What plans do you have for the big day?

My blog friend Shauna over at My Mix of Six
has the cutest idea to share the special day with her family.
