Cinco de Five-O | Sombrero cake

One of my co-workers asked me to make two cakes for her husband's 50th birthday.  His birthday is today, May 5, so she themed it up calling it "Cinco de Five-O" and I kept with the theme and made a sombrero cake.

I actually didn't have a plan for how to make a sombrero cake so I just started with a 12" double layer base so I knew I would have enough cake for the number of guests.  Then I used a small oval and one half of the ball pan set.

Pictures tell a little better story...

And the final cake in all its glory...

The writing on the side of the sombrero says...
"¡Feliz Cumpleaños Curt!"

Carrot cake is his favorite so that was the second cake for the party...

Carrot cake is my favorite too, the cream cheese frosting alone is worth the calories, but the cake makes it even more amazing.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Holy yumminess, those are both gorgeous! Have I mentioned that the British really can't do cake? They think they can, but... no. Someday, my cake will come...
